Double-Coated Polyester Film

Model # 75

A 1.0 mil. double coated tape with a polyester film backing and rubber thermosetting adhesive used for bonding applications requiring a posative insulation barrier. Like all 3M insulating tapes, 75 tape is available in standard and custom widths and lengths.

PTFE Rulon

Model # RU

RU is a 10 mil, skived film of compounded PTFE rulon with silicone pressure sensitive adhesive. It offers a low coefficient of friction and the high temperature stability of teflonâ„¢. RU also offers outstanding abrasion resistance which increases its wear resistance over PTFE in rotating bearing tests.

PTFE Film

Model # TV

TV is a 6.5 mil, PTFE film with silicone pressure sensitive adhesive. It is often used as an excellent release surface on packaging equipment and heat sealing machines, roll coverings on plastic extruders, guide rails, and angle bars in the graphic arts industry.

High Temperature Glass Tape

Model # 102

102 is a 1.5 mil, skived PTFE film backing compounded with carbon to produce a conductive film. 102 film can be surface treated to enhance bonding to other substrates. 102 is a static dissipative conductive film. Video cassettes often employ it as a spacer to help reduce friction as well as static dissipation. Convoluted PTFE hose often requires a layer of it to help provide a static drain for charges built up when certain liquids flow through the hose. As a result the 102 film prevents arcing within the hose as the PTFE wall degrades. 102 is a 1.5 mil, skived PTFE film compounded with carbon to produce a conductive film. It can be surface treated to enhance bonding to other substrates.

Skived PTFE

Model # 103

103 is a 3 mil, skived PTFE that has been compounded with carbon to produce a highly conductive film. 103 can be surface treated to enhance bonding to other substrates. 103 can be used as a static dissipative layer within “high static” paint hoses.

Skived PTFE Tape

Model # 211

211 is a 2 mil, film, skived from virgin PTFE, that has been etched on one side with sodium ammonia after which a primer has been applied to enhance bonding to elastomers and pressure sensitive adhesives. This surface treatment allows PTFE, which normally exhibits very poor adhesion, to be bonded to other materials. In some applications, sodium ammonia etched materials exhibit somewhat higher strengths than those etched with sodium naphthalene. Applications for sodium etched PTFE include bonding to elastomers to produce laminated diaphragms, as well as the application of pressure sensitive adhesives in the production of PTFE pressure sensitive tapes. In all of the above applications, the lamination or adhesive application is usually accomplished with a primer that is specific to the material being applied.

PTFE Film Tape

Model # 212

212 is a 2 mi, skived virgin PTFE, that has been etched on one side with sodium napthalene. This surface treatment allows PTFE, which normally exhibits very poor adhesion to be bonded to other materials. The major applications for sodium etched PTFE involve bonding to elastomers to produce laminated diaphragms, as well as the application on pressure sensitive adhesives in the production of PTFE tapes.

Skived PTFE Tape

Model # 213

213 is a 2 mil, film skived from virgin PTFE, that has been etched on one side with Sodium Naphthalene after which a primer has been applied to enhance bonding to elastomers and pressure sensitive adhesives. This surface treatment allows the PTFE which normally exhibits very poor adhesion to be bonded to other materials. The primary applications for sodium etched PTFE involve bonding to elastomers to produce laminated diaphragms, as well as the application of pressure sensitive adhesives in the production of PTFE pressure sensitive tapes.

Fine Line Tape

Model # 218

3M masking tape 218 is a 4.8 mil. high-performance film backed tape with low profile and high adhesion for excellent paint lines and other masking and holding applications. Rubber adhesive has an ideal balance of properties for masking use. Tape also has a green matte finish. 218 gives an excellent color line separation due to its thinness. Backing is specially processed to strech easily for smooth curves, yet can be easily torn by hand with a quick tearing action. Backing will also allow taping over fresh paint sooner than paper tapes with less chance of imprint damage. Tape has excellent moisture and solvent resistance. 218 is not considered a high temperature tape but could be used on bake cycles up to 250°F for up to 30 minutes. This product should not be subjected to outdoor exposure or prolonged periods of sunlight. Tape may become very difficult to remove. 218 is quilified to meet military spec. and is manufactured in an ISO 9002 registered plant to meet ISO quality standards.

Superior Performance Box Sealing Tape

355 is a 3.43 mil, BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) film with hot melt rubber resin adhesive. It is primarily used for box sealing, splicing and other demanding packaging applications.

Tartan™ Box Sealing Tape

369 is a 1.6 mil, biaxially oriented polypropylene film used for non-critical box sealing applications. This product has a conformable backing and a pressure sensitive hot melt adhesive system. This construction provides a good closure for lightweight boxes exposed to minimal distribution hazards.

Skived UHMW Film

Model # 402

402 is a 3 mil, skived, carbon filled UHMW (Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene) Film. The carbon type and level achieve conductivity sufficient for static dissipation applications. Applications for this product include die-cut spacers for video cassettes, electrical conductivity for static dissipation and applications involving the need for high abrasion resistance.

Plasma Tape

Model # 411

411 is a 11 mil, heavy aluminum foil/glass fabric laminate with a high temperature silicone adhesive. The aluminum foil provides excellent reflective and conductive characteristics in high temperature applications but is clean removable. It is primarily used in more demanding plasma flame spray applications. This includes wire arc, HVOF and traditional plasma spray.

High Temperature Glass Tape

469 is a 7 mil close woven glass tape. It is used as a very high temperature (500°F) insulation tape. Applications include slot and coil insulation, heat barrier tape, harness wrap and cable splicing.

Silicone / Rubber Glass Cloth

D/W 493 is a 22 mil, glass cloth/aluminum foil masking tape used in plasma flame spraying. These layers are laminated “double-ply” of silicone rubber & glass cloth & coated with a high temperature silicone adhesive. It is used when a single ply tape will not provide sufficient protection. The double ply construction eliminates the need for two hand layup operations, thus saving labor cost.

PTFE Tape

Model # 503

662 is a 4.3 mil, highly tensilized PTFE coated with a high temperature silicone adhesive. The blue tensilized PTFE film is combined with a unique filled composition to enhance the performance characteristics that are similar to an extruded PTFE tape. It has an extremely high tensile strength, increased wear properties and high temperature resistance unlike any other PTFE from DeWal. It is used for roll protection in high speed, high temperature flat die extrusion of polyethylene coatings and laminations. Other applications include various operations thoughout the aircraft maintenance cycle.

High Temperature Adhesive Transfer Tape

Model # 504

504FL is a 4.0 mil. transfer tape that uses the 100 adhesive designed for temperature exposure to 450°F (232°C) for short periods of time and/ or solvent resistant. Bond strength increases as a function of time and temperature. 504FL will have lower intial tack than the other 3M 100 adhesive transfer tapes to some substrates.

Silicone Rubber Glass Cloth

Model # 504

504 is a 22 mil, silicone / rubber glass cloth “double ply” laminate coated with a high temperature silicone adhesive. These products are used as masking tapes in plasma flame spray when a single ply tape will not provide sufficient protection. The double-ply construction eliminates the need for two hand lay-up operations thus saving labor costs during masking.

510 is a 5 mil, adhesive coated sheeting intended for production of short-term multicolored emblems and markings which have similar appearance in the daytime and at night when viewed by reflected light.

Impact Stripping Tape

Model # 518

An 85 mil. thick impact stripping tape used to provide excellent surface protection during plastic media blast (PMB) paint stripping operations. It is recommended that the temperature of the application surface is at least 40°F or above. The application surface should be warm, clean and dry to ensure that the 3M™ Impact Stripping Tape 518 adheres well. Rub down firmly when applying to achieve maximum adhesion. To obtain best performance, use this product within one year from date of manufacture and store under normal conditions of 70°F an d50% relative humidity in the original carton. Impact Stripping Tape

An 85.0 mil. rubber backing with acrylic adhesive stripping tape used to provide excellent surface protection during plastic media blast (PMB) paint stripping operations. Heat Bonding Film

620 is a 6 mil, three layer bonding film construction of a polyester film core coated on both sides with a polyester thermoplastic adhesive (non curing). This bonding film exhibits good adhesion to a variety of substrates while also providing a dielectric insulating layer.

PTFE Tape

663 is a 4.3 mil, highly tensilized PTFE film coated with a high temperature silicone adhesive. 663 is “burnt orange” in color utilizing a film that is tensilized and combined with a unique filled composition to enhance the performance characteristics that are similar to an extruded PTFE tape. It is used in various operations thoughout the aircraft maintenance markets. Hazard Marking Vinyl Tape

Model # 767

3M767 is a 5.0 mil. tape with a polyvinyl chloride backing and a rubber adhesive used in general purpose hazard/ safety marking applications which is printed in red and white stripes. While vinyl tapes resist most common solvents, care should be taken to avoid ketones, chlorinated hydrocarbons and esters found in lacquers, thinners, degreasers, paint strippers, etc., which may cause the backing to swell or curl. Best results are attained when applied to a clean, dry surface at temperatures between 60°F to 80°F. To obtain best performance, use this product within 12 months from date of manufacture and store under normal conditions of 60°F to 80°F and 40% to 60% relative humidity in the origianl carton.

BriteGard™ Film Tape

Model # 823

823 is a 2.4 mil, bright yellow Scotchproâ„¢ backing used for label protection during shipping. The bright color highlights the packing list or address label for quick location on the package. The aggressive adhesive was developed to stick to many and varied cartons.

Skived PTFE Tape

101T is a 3.5 mil, skived PTFE film and coated with a high temperature silicone adhesive. They are UL recognized. They are used in electrical applications such as coil wraps, separators, transformers, slot liners and harness wrapping where good insulation and heat resistance properties are required. Box Sealing Tape

3750 is a 3.1mil, polypropylene film, primarily used for box sealing, splicing, recooperage and other demanding packaging applications. This product has the strongest conformable backing and the most consistent pressure sensitive hot melt adhesive system available. This time proven construction assures superior performance in a wide range of enviroments and applications.

Single Coated Foam Tape

Model # 4116

A 62.5 mil. urethane foam tape featuring A-25 acrylic adhesive on a silicone treated liner used for coding, sealing and identification applications. 4116 is a natural white, firm, high density open cell foam tape with pressure sensitive adhesive on one side. The acrylic adhesive offers high initial quick stick to many types of surfaces, along with excellent shear strength and high temperature performance. The adhesive is protected by the thick, silicone liner. Urethane foam, series 4100, are firm, rigid open-cell tapes that offer excellent cushioning characteristics while allowing air or gas to pass through the open cells. Skip slitting is also used for roll stability on these narrow sizes. Urethane tapes may turn yellow when exposed to light, however, the physical performance is not effected. 4116 tape adheres to a variety of substrates, including latex painted wood, lacquered wood, enameled steel, glass, aluminum, stainless steel, acrylic, ABS and PVC (non-plasticized). The tape adhesion is typically satisfactory within 20 minutes and continues to build with additional time. The solvent/ fuel resistant test consists of visual observations of tape bonded to steel panels and immersed totally in solvent/ fuel for 24 hours.

Polypropylene Carton Sealing Tape

Model # 4264

4264 is a 1.7 mil, biaxially oriented, polypropylene film with a hot melt adhesive for carton sealing. It is primarily used for carton sealing and light bundling. It has good impact resistance, very good adhesion and shear resistance on most carton surfaces.

High Performance, High Temp Paper Tape

4302 is a 6.7 mil, fine crepe paper suitable for solvent or water-based paint systems. Residue-free removal from rubber, glass and paint. The fine crepe paper guarantees sharp edge finishing.

Silicone Rubber Coated Rayon Fabric Tape

4563 is a 13.4 mil, smooth siliconized treated cloth tape. It is ideal for web control roller covering in the paper and plastics industries. It consists of a specially treated rayon fabric that is siliconized treated and a thermoset rubber adhesive. The coated surface is highly resistant to “sticky” substances, yet provides a reliable “non-slip” effect on smooth surfaces. It is commonly refered to as “printer’s friend”.

4639 is a 11.6 mil, rayon fabric with a high adhesion which meets the requirements of TLV 9027/01/03 of Siemens AG. (halogen<1000 ppm, sulfur<1000 ppm, etc.) Used for work in nuclear power plants to mark parts to be dismantled.

Polyethylene Surface Protection

Model # 5112

A 5.0 mil. polyethylene tape with a low-tack adhesive system to help maximize surface protection for many polished metals, plastics and glass materials. 5112 tape offers excellent protection for many material surfaces that are susceptible to damage caused by abrasion and marring, (See surface protection). This product is not designed for prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for extended periods which may affect the performance of the tape.

General Purpose PTFE Glass Cloth Tape

Model # 5151

5151 is a 4.5 mil. easy unwind glass cloth tape impregnated with PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and coated with a silicone adhesive which provides high temperature resistance and a very strong, abrasion-resistant backing. Very low moisture absorption allows the tape to perform in many humid environments. 5151 tape provides greater tensile strength and resistance to tear and punture than typical PTFE film backed tapes. CAUTION: when PTFE film tape is exposed to temperatures above 400°F, small quantities of hazardous vapors may be released. Inhalation of these vapors may be harmful or may cause respiratory tract irritation. Do not heat or expose PTFE film tape to temperatures above 400°F. To obtain best performance, use this product within 12 months from date of manufacture and store under normal conditions of 60°F to 80°F and 40% to 50% relative humidity in the original carton.

Low Static Polyimide Film Tape

Model # 5419

A 2.7 mil. translucent, polyimide film backing tape with silicone adhesive used for gold tab protection during wave solder of printed circuit boards. 5419 tape employs proprietary technology that results in a unique and an extremely low electrostatic discharge at unwind and removal from PWB. Conventional polyimide tapes can typically generate over 10,000 volts during use which can damage board mounted electronic components. Tape 5419 overcomes this problem without any drawbacks of “anti-static” or “static-free” tapes. Polyimide and polyester films are very similar at room temperature. However, as you increase or decrease the temperature, the properties of polyimide are less affected and does not soften at elevated temperatures, therefore, the film provides an excellent release surface.

UHMW Polyethylene Tape

3M5421 is a 6.7 mil. ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene film with a rubber adhesive which provides an excellent abrasion resistant surface. The liner makes tape ideal for fabricating or die-cutting into various lengths and shapes. UHMW polyethylene is a thermoplastic that has a unique combination of properties which make it ideal for many tough impact wear or sliding applications. Within its operational temperature range, UHMW polyethylene tape can provide the following advantages: (A) Outstanding abrasion resistance will outwear many types of PTFE and other materials in sliding applications. UHMW Polyethylene Tape

3M5423 is an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene film coated with a rubber adhesive which provides an excellent abrasion resistant surface. 5423 tape is a thick caliper UHMW polyethylene tape for extended service life as a protective surface against extreme wear. The liner makes tape ideal for fabricating or die-cutting into various lengths and shapes. UHMW polyethylene is a thermoplastic that has a unique combination of properties which make it ideal for many tough impact wear or sliding applications. Within its operational temperature range, UHMW polyethylene tape can provide the following advantages: (A) Outstanding abrasion resistance will outwear many types of PTFE and other materials in sliding applications. UHMW Polyethylene Tape

3M5425 is a 4.5 mil. ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene film coated with a special acrylic adhesive that is resistant to many solvents. The acrylic adhesive is a firm solvent and oil resistant adhesive which bonds best to high surface energy materials. UHMW polyethylene is a thermoplastic that has a unique combination of properties which make tape ideal for many tough impact wear or sliding applications. Within its operational temperature range, UHMW polyethylene tape can provide the following advantages: (A) Outstanding abrasion resistance will outwear many types of PTFE and other materials in sliding applications. (B) Low coefficient of friction exceeded only by the PTFE’s. (C) Self-lubricating can often be used where lubrication is not possible because of contamination (D) Sound damping high energy absorption capacity helps reduce noise levels in machinery and equipment. 3M5430 is a transparent UHMW polyethylene film tape for the automotive industry to help control squeaks and rattles due to vibration or wear of metal and plastic materials.

PTFE Skived Film Tape

Model # 5480

5480 is a 3.7 mil. skived PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) film backing with a silicone adhesive used for wrapping applications and sealing and masking applications. Skived film tapes demonstrate good conformability when wrapping rollers. This tape provides excellent chemical resistance except or organic solvents. The silicone adhesive will be attacked by commercial organic solvents and 5480 and 5481 tapes are not recommended for applications requiring organic resistance. To help prevent wrinkling or bubbling of the backing on PTFE film tapes when they are subjected to temperatures above 250°F, pre-heat the surface to at least 150°F (preferred 180°F) to obtain best results.

PTFE Skived Film Tape

Model # 5481

3M5481 is a 6.8 mil. skived PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) film backing with a silicone adhesive used for many wrapping applications and sealing and masking applications. Skived film tapes demonstrate good conformability when wrapping rollers. This tape provides excellent chemical resistance except to organic solvents. The silicone adhesive will be attacked by commercial organic solvents and 5480 and 5481 tapes are not recommended for applications requiring organic resistance. To help prevent wrinkling or bubbling of the backing on PTFE film tapes when they are subjected to temperatures above250°F, pre-heat the surface to at least 150°F (preferred 180°F) to obtain best results. CAUTION: when PTFE film tape is exposed to temperatures above 400°F small qauntities of hazardous vapors may be released. Inhalation of these vapors may be harmful or may cause respiratory tract irritation. Do not heat or expose PTFE film tape to temperatures above 400°F. To obtain best performance, use this product within 12 months from date of manufacture and store under normal conditions of 60°F to 80°F and 40 to 60% relative humidity in the original carton.

PTFE Extruded Film Tape

Model # 5490

5490 is a 3.5 mil. extruded PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) film backing with a silicone adhesive primarily used for an easy release surface on rollers, plates, belts, etc. where build up of sticky materials and inks can occur. Tape 5490 and 5491 are extruded, calendered film tapes that provide an exceptionally smooth surface when applied and resist curling during unwind. Extruded PTFE film tapes lie flatter than typical skived PTFE film tapes. Chemical resistance of tape 5490 and 5491 is excellent except to organic solvents.

3M VHB™ 61mil Dark Gray Conformable

Model # 5962

5962 is a 61mil VHBâ„¢ acrylic foam tape with double coated pressure sensitive adhesive. It is used for bonding a wide variety of substrates, including lower surface energy materials, such as powder coated paints and plastics. The foam is conformable to increase contact with surfaces.

Double Coated PP Differential Adhesion Tape

Model # 6917

6917 is a 3.34 mil, double coated polypropylene film used as a re-openable closure system for filmic bags. It is transparent and has a widely different adhesion values on each side. This produces a smooth open and close action without leaving adhesive residues. The red polypropylene film liner and backing is easily cut with the hot wire of bag making machines. The acrylic adhesive system is aging resistant and offers high adhesion values on each side.

Colored Film Tape

Model # 8459

8459 is a 2.6 mil, Scotchpro™ colored film tape is designed for specialty sealing and combining applications. This tape features Scotchpro™ film for excellent abrasion resistance. Using specially designed 3M applicating equipment, the tape can be made to contour to objects being sealed, attached, and stacked. This tape is often chosen for security closure applications, decorative or color coding requirements, and for convenience opening needs. An extensive line of semi-automatic equipment is available to facilitate application of #8459. An engineering staff is ready to handle special applications with modified or custom equipment. Prior to use, storage of tape at 70°F and 40-50% relative humidity is recommended.

Web & Film Splicing Tape

9213 is a 3.3 mil, polyester film designed to perform a variety of splicing applications where chemical resistance and heat degradation resistance are desired.

Squeak Reduction Tape

9324 is a 6.5mil black UHMW-PE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) film tape. It is used by the automotive industry to help control squeaks and rattles, due to vibration or wear of metal and plastic materials. Double Coated Tape with 420 Adhesive

Model # 9799

A 9.0 mil. tape featuring 420 acryilc adhesive coated on both sides with a polyester backing used for nameplates, appliques, sound and thermal damping and gasket attachment. The polyester backing adds dimensional stability to foams and other substrates, along with ease of die cutting and laminating. 420 adhesive provides an excellent adhesion to many plastics along with providing good temperature and chemical resistance while withstanding tough application environments. To apply strips of adhesive use 3M’s dispenser selection, for example: manual dispensers- C25, H10, H128, M712, M742, M744, P52 and P56/ definite length dispensers- M82, M87, M96, M910 and M920/ or semi automatic dispensers- S625 with attachment, T646 and T653.

Aluminum Foil Tape

A662 is an aluminum foil tape with 3 mil aluminum foil backing and 2 mil acrylic adhesive. It is primarily used in high performance masking applications in the aerospace industry during painting.

Glass Cloth Tape

G569 is a 7 mil electrical grade fiberglass tape with clear acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive on one side. Its solvent resistance and high strength/weight ratio make it an excellent choice for coil and motor applications. G569 has superior flagging resistance and excellent conformability.

7 Mil UHMW Tape

P630 is a 7 mil, polyolefin film with a high tack rubber resin adhesive. It is designed to offer an excellent release surface so that materials will slide over the surface freely without the need for lubricating oils or grease. 423-3 is a 3 mil, UHMW polyethylene film with an aggressive permanent acrylic adhesive. The UHMW film provides an excellent low friction, non-stick surface in many ways similar to PTFE. The film has a very high tensile strength and is very tough and abrasion resistant. This tape has two primary applications automotive and mechanical. The 423 series has passed a series of automotive tests for use by GM, Ford and Daimler-Chrysler. Mechanical applications include chute liners, wear pads and guide rails.

Double Coated Polyethylene Foam Tape

Model # 4466W

3M 4466 is a 62.0 mil. double coated polyethylene foam tape with rubber adhesive is ideal for many joining, mounting, gasketing, and sealing applications involving irregular surfaces. 4466W tape combines a conformable closed cell foam with a rubber adhesive that provides high initial adhesion to a variety of surfaces including polyethylene and polypropylene. This tape uses 745 rubber, pressure-sensitive adhesive that provides excellent initial tack and adhesion to a wide variety of surfaces, including many low surface energy plastics. Solvent splash testing cycle = 20 seconds submersion and 20 seconds air dry through 3 cycles. Bond strength is dependent upon the amount of adhesive-to-surface contact developed. Firm application pressure helps develop better adhesive contact and improve bond strength. To obtain optimum adhesion, the bonding surfaces must be clean, dry and well unified. Typical surface cleaning solvents are isopropyl alcohol and water (rubbing alcohol) or water. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s precautions and directions for use when using cleaning solvents. Initial tape application to surfaces below 50°F is not recommended because the adhesive becomes too firm to adhere readily. Norcryl Solid Acrylic Bonding Tape (Discontinued)

The Norcryl solid acrylic core has outstanding internal strength. Norcryl structural grade bonding power can save time, increase productivity, reduce costs and improve overall product appearance. Norcryl is resistant to Ultraviolet radiation, high humidity and climate extremes. A 3-year aging study showed that its adhesion strength actually increases with time. Norcryl maintains a strong bond in high temperatures. Over time Norcryl will not harden or become brittle. Norcryl A-1000 series is water clear and virtually invisible after installation. Conventional attachment methods cause localized distortions and stresses as the temperature fluctuates. An example of this includes dimples found on riveted trailer side skins. Norcryl tapes minimize these stress points by distributing stresses evenly across the entire tape contact area and compensating for thermal expansion. This provides a uniform appearance and improves fatigue resistance. Norcryl also acts as a joint seal, reduces noise, dampens vibrations and prevents galvanic corrosion when bonding dissimilar metals.

2302-10 is a 11.5 mil, UHMW polyolefin film coated with a pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. It is frequently used to line chutes and conveyors. 2302-10 can be used to provide an abrasion resistant, anti-stick, anti-friction surface at temperatures up to 225° F.

244-2JSF 3.5 mil, skived and tensilized PTFE film that is coated with a pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. The tensilized film provied a higher tensile strength, lower elongation and higher dielectic strength than traditional skived PTFE film. 244-2 JSF has been surfaced treated on the top side to render it bondable to itself or other materials. This product is used in various aerospace release application within composite constructions. This tape is also used in electrical applications where good insulation and heat resistance is required.
